Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/MacGyverMagic
Final (37/0/0) ended 10:00 am, December 1, 2004 (UTC)
I've been on Wikipedia since April 18, 2004 and I feel like I've shown I'm a trustworthy and coolheaded editor. I do a lot of Wikipedia maintenance - small edits to cleanup layout, categorization, grammar, and POV. And lately, in my work for the "Did you know"-section, I've come across far to much pages where I thought admin function would come in handy, so I've decided to take the plunge. To anyone who objects, please explain how I can improve. (see questions below for more details).
Comment:The advertizement Ambi mentioned, is a message I sent out to some people who've come across me, to make sure they were aware of this. Here's the text I sent them, for some people, it was slightly edited.
- MacGyverMagic for adminship
- I've decided to take the plunge and self-nominate for adminship to make the work I do a lot easier. Please head over to Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship#MacGyverMagic and let your voice be heard. There's no hard feelings if you oppose, just make sure you let me know how I can improve. -- [[User:MacGyverMagic|Mgm|(talk)]] 10:50, Nov 24, 2004 (UTC)

- Advertising his adminship is a bit odd, but I have no doubt that he'd make a fine admin. Ambi 10:39, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- I think he'll make a very good, solid administrator. I support. - Ta bu shi da yu 10:41, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Definitely support! Excellent person with excellent contributions. I wish Mac good luck on the nomination. - "Antonio Odd Barbarian Martin"

- I remember looking at DYK and thinking - "Oh gads, these are all stale." I can't say that's happened recently due to Mgm's commitment to it. Support. - RedWordSmith 16:46, Nov 24, 2004 (UTC)
- I have to admit to being a bit unimpressed by the advertising of this vote on user talk pages: a decision here should be based on merits alone from people who regularly visit this page. However I do not have a problem supporting this user, who's edits are well above reproach. -- Graham ☺ | Talk 17:19, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- He's good user. He will be good admin. He can perfectly explain some Wikipedia specific problems to newcomers. [[User:Darwinek|Darwinek (equal rights for everyone!)]] 19:28, Nov 24, 2004 (UTC)
- I didn't get an ad, but he's a good editor in my view. Uses cleanup. We need more of that. Cool Hand Luke 21:19, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Support. (BTW: The ads don't worry me because if nominees have no merit or borderline merit then their ads will backfire and cause people to vote against them; And if you have enough merit that ads will work for you, as in this case, then I say "best of luck to you!") -- Nickj 21:40, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Absolutely. Mackensen (talk) 21:55, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- I don't find it a bit odd that someone who works quietly behind the scenes (as does MGM) goes unnoticed long enough to need admin power before somebody else nominates them. I doubt that any of the better editors will oppose this self-nomination. I support it. Pedant 22:45, 2004 Nov 24 (UTC)

- Support, I don't really know much about you but, I trust the judgement of some of those who voted for you and whom I'm familiar with. Tony the Marine

Questions for the candidate
A few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:
- 1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? (Please read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.)
- I'd be using it at places were help is needed. But I'd mostly be doing speedy deletions at "Newpages" and RC for obvious vandalism and grafitti. Also, I'd use the rollback feature for easy reversal of vandalism in older pages. Temp blocking of repeating vandals, page protection, and generally using the abilities to help out newbies would also be on my to do list.

- 2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
- That would have to be the major restructuring I did on Sodium chloride. It may have been my first edit, but I still feel it's the best one. Most of my work is related to layout and fixing existing stuff instead of submitting new material. Also see: Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2004, edited straight after a live television broadcast to show the results. I'm still surprised no one beat me to that.

- 3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and will deal with it in the future?
- I've got mixed up in the conflict at Henry Kissinger which is subject to an edit war. I initially sided with one of the editors, but I've since come to the conclusion that all of them have broken rules. I've tried to get them to come to a compromise, but to no avail. It's now in arbitration. I've learned from my mistake, and I'll do some throurough research before siding in an argument ever again. But I'll keep promoting discussion towards a consensus, and not use any admin powers in conflicts in which I'm directly involved.
