How do I write an interesting hook?

Successful hooks tend to have several traits. Most importantly, they share a surprising or intriguing fact. They give readers enough context to understand the hook, but leave enough out to make them want to learn more. They are written for a general audience who has no prior knowledge of or interest in the topic area. Lastly, they are concise, and do not attempt to cover multiple facts or present information about the subject beyond what's needed to understand the hook.

When will my nomination be reviewed?

This page is often backlogged. As long as your submission is still on the page, it will stay there until an editor reviews it. Since editors are encouraged to review the oldest submissions first, it may take several weeks until your submission is reviewed. In the meantime, please consider reviewing another submission (not your own) to help reduce the backlog (see instructions below). Because of WP:DYKTIMEOUT, a nomination should be reviewed within two months since the reviewer/promoter may agree to reject and close an unpromoted hook after that time has passed.

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the nomination you submitted to this nominations page, it may have been approved and is on the approved nominations page waiting to be promoted. It could also have been added to one of the prep areas, promoted from prep to a queue, or is on the main page.

If the nominated hook is in none of those places, then the nomination has probably been rejected. Such a rejection usually only occurs if it was at least a couple of weeks old and had unresolved issues for which any discussion had gone stale. If you think your nomination was unfairly rejected, you can query this on the DYK discussion page, but as a general rule such nominations will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

Any editor who was not involved in writing/expanding or nominating an article may review it by checking to see that the article meets all the DYK criteria (long enough, new enough, no serious editorial or content issues) and the hook is cited. Editors may also alter the suggested hook to improve it, suggest new hooks, or even lend a hand and make edits to the article to which the hook applies so that the hook is supported and accurate. For a more detailed discussion of the DYK rules and review process see the supplementary guidelines and the WP:Did you know/Reviewing guide.

To post a comment or review on a DYK nomination, follow the steps outlined below:

  • Look through this page, Template talk:Did you know, to find a nomination you would like to comment on.
  • Click the "Review or comment" link at the top of the nomination. You will be taken to the nomination subpage.
  • The top of the page includes a list of the DYK criteria. Check the article to ensure it meets all the relevant criteria.
  • To indicate the result of the review (i.e., whether the nomination passes, fails, or needs some minor changes), leave a signed comment on the page. Please begin with one of the 5 review symbols that appear at the top of the edit screen, and then indicate all aspects of the article that you have reviewed; your comment should look something like the following:

    Article length and age are fine, no copyvio or plagiarism concerns, reliable sources are used. But the hook needs to be shortened.

    If you are the first person to comment on the nomination, there will be a line :* <!-- REPLACE THIS LINE TO WRITE FIRST COMMENT, KEEPING  :* --> showing you where you should put the comment.
  • Save the page.
  • After the nomination is approved, a bot will automatically list the nomination page on Template talk:Did you know/Approved.

How to promote an accepted hook

Check list for nomination review completeness
  1. Select a hook from the approved nominations page that has one of these ticks at the bottom post: .
  2. Check to make sure basic review requirements were completed.
    • Any outstanding issue following needs to be addressed before promoting.
  3. Check the article history for any substantive changes since it was nominated or reviewed.
  4. Images for the lead slot must be freely licensed. Fair-use images are not permitted. Images loaded on Commons that appear on the Main Page are automatically protected by KrinkleBot.
  5. Hook must be stated in both the article and source (which must be cited at the end of the article sentence where stated).
  6. Hook should make sense grammatically.
  7. Try to vary subject matters within each prep area.
  8. Try to select a funny, quirky or otherwise upbeat hook for the last or bottom hook in the set.
Steps to add a hook to prep
  • In one tab, open the nomination page of the hook you want to promote.
  • In a second tab, open the prep set you intend to add the hook to.

  1. For hooks held for specific dates, refer to "Local update times" section on DYK Queue.
    • Completed Prep area number sets will be promoted by an administrator to corresponding Queue number.
  2. Copy and paste the hook into a chosen slot.
    • Make sure there's a space between ... and that, and a ? at the end.
    • Check that there's a bold link to the article.
  3. If it's the lead (first) hook, paste the image where indicated at the top of the template.
  4. Copy and paste ALL the credit information (the {{DYKmake}} and {{DYKnom}} templates) at the bottom
  5. Check your work in the prep's Preview mode.
    • At the bottom under "Credits", to the right of each article should have the link "View nom subpage" ; if not, a subpage parameter will need to be added to the DYKmake.
  6. Save the Prep page.

  4. Save.

How to remove a rejected hook

  • Open the DYK nomination subpage of the hook you would like to remove. (It's best to wait several days after a reviewer has rejected the hook, just in case someone contests or the article undergoes a large change.)
  • In the window where the DYK nomination subpage is open, replace the line {{DYKsubpage with {{subst:DYKsubpage, and replace |passed= with |passed=no. Then save the page. This has the effect of wrapping up the discussion on the DYK nomination subpage in a blue archive box and stating that the nomination was unsuccessful, as well as adding the nomination to a category for archival purposes.

How to remove a hook from the prep areas or queue

  • Edit the prep area or queue where the hook is and remove the hook and the credits associated with it.
  • Go to the hook's nomination subpage (there should have been a link to it in the credits section).
    • View the edit history for that page
    • Go back to the last version before the edit where the hook was promoted, and revert to that version to make the nomination active again.
    • Add a new icon on the nomination subpage to cancel the previous tick and leave a comment after it explaining that the hook was removed from the prep area or queue, and why, so that later reviewers are aware of this issue.
  • Add a transclusion of the template back to this page so that reviewers can see it. It goes under the date that it was first created/expanded/listed as a GA. You may need to add back the day header for that date if it had been removed from this page.
  • If you removed the hook from a queue, it is best to either replace it with another hook from one of the prep areas, or to leave a message at WT:DYK asking someone else to do so.

How to move a nomination subpage to a new name

  • Don't; it should not ever be necessary, and will break some links which will later need to be repaired. Even if you change the title of the article, you don't need to move the nomination page.

Starting review:

  • As noted above, this should be held until after the upcoming elections
    • That will in turn require updating wording like to be voted upon in the November 2024 election. It would be useful to mark this up with {{Update after}} reminders now, but I'll leave that for somebody else.
    • Obviously, if we run this after the election, it will need to be updated with the outcome and probably reactions.
  • New enough (created August 25, nominated the next day)
  • Long enough
  • QPQ exempt
  • Earwig calls out lots of text duplication, but it's all properly attributed quotes, so no worries there.
  • Since this is a controversial issue, I gave the sources a close look. For the most part, they appear to be WP:RS. I do see a few duplicated sources, which WP:REFILL can help fix, but that's not a DYK criterion.
  • The Official arguments section does a good job of hewing to WP:NPOV.
    • I am, however, somewhat concerned about the Support section. The large "Yes" box duplicates much of the preceding paragraph, is not balanced by a "No" box, probably violates MOS:EMBED, and is almost certainly incomplete today and at risk of going out of date at any point in the future. I'd drop it.
    • I'm also unconvinced that the Polling section is useful and probably violates WP:NPOV since it only lists one poll.
  • I pretty much agree with Andrevan about the hooks. Although they all get under the 200 character official limit, they're all excessively wordy, and not very interesting.

Thanks for the review. I agree with some of your concerns, mostly about edits since my DYK submission, eg the Yes box (blown up from a more selective prose text) and the Polling. If (or: since) the DYK can't be run at this stage, I will wait to edit and update until after the election, ok? Given the timing, does the "new enough" criterion still a pass? RoySmith, ProfGray, I'm not nearly so sanguine that this one won't be closed on October 25 or 26 when it hits two months. If it's approved and in the special occasion section for nominations waiting for the election to be over, then there isn't a problem. If it's still not approved at the end of the coming week, there probably will be. I would respectfully suggest that ProfGray do whatever is necessary to get the article and/or hooks into such shape that the nomination can be passed during the coming week; any post-election edits can be made per whatever new information is relevant. In response to points above -- the Polling section has been removed. The "Yes" support section has been balanced by a "No" opposition section. (I didn't happen to create this section, but I added a few opposing orgs and now it does seem balanced.) I adjusted some language to be more NPOV and I welcome any other concerns about the article. Thanks. It'd be great to get help with the hook. Personally, I find it interesting (fascinating, ironic, clever) that both the proponents and opponents claim to be against gerrymandering and both blame the other side for gerrymandering. I would question whether a broad audience would know what gerrymandering was. Assuming it checks out, I suggest something less specific, like "that in the lead-up to the 2024 election, the summary of 2024 Ohio Issue 1 was a flashpoint for legal action".--Launchballer 12:26, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's an interesting point. My first thought was, "No, that's dumb. Of course everybody knows what gerrymandering is". But then as I read a bit of Gerrymandering I realized it's only an issue in places which use an election system similar to what we have in the US. If you are electing people based on total vote count across the entire electorate, it's not a thing.   • The article is new enough. Although WP:DYKLEN does not address this, I am not happy when an article just barely meets the length requirements thanks to repeating a significant portion of its content in the lead pararaph or lead section. Without said repetition, this article contains about 1350 characters of prose. I also do not think that a minister opening a chess championship is particularly interesting.   • @Surtsicna: Well, the thing is, it is what a lede is supposed to do, to summarize the basics, and while I try to keep the lede as necessarily short as possible, in this case the lede just happened to summarize the entire body in only a third of its size. The article looks much more substantial now. There is some fluff, however. I do not think it is encyclopedically vital to note that she congratulated someone on election, or that she attended a memorial service. The bit about her donating money might be seen as promotional. And what was she congratulated for at the chess championship? ALT1 is an improvement, but I wonder if something could be done with the counterfeit prescription scandal. That sounds intriguing.   • : Seems new and long enough, almost entirely written by nominator; I have a few very minor problems with the sourcing that I think can be resolved by just copying some nearby sources, which I tagged: specifically, I think there should be a citation for the 1st paragraph of "Svayamvara in the Rg Veda" and one place in the 1st paragraph of "Damayantī's Svayamvara". Also, I think it would be more clear if the source at the end of the last paragraph of the lead were duplicated to the first two paragraphs as well if it applies to them, and per the DYK guidelines, I think that the source given has to be present at the end of the sentence giving the claim present in the hook. Don't see any neutrality issues. Article is (listing criteria) presentable, image & hook seem good, no other complaints.   • A drive-by comment: this has the perennial form of "first" hooks, that even though we may have sources calling them first, there's a high likelihood of WP:ERRORS when someone notices the hook and remembers the existence of someone else using terza rima in Hebrew at an earlier date, overlooked by our source. To forestall this, can we maybe rewrite the hook to avoid the word "first"? Something like

I don't mind that, but I think it's rather unlikely that someone will find another example of it, since Dante died in 1321 and Moses was born in 1388, and there are precious few remaining manuscripts from that time to begin with, though I suppose it's not entirely out of the question that a cache of codices will be found in some Vatican annex basement or a Dead Sea caves situation. For reference, the source (Dvora Bregman) says Rieti was, in fact, the first Hebrew poet to use this form, and through his influence it was incorporated into Hebrew poetry by his successors.   • Not a full review, but the interesting thing about the article is the fact that Jewish dairy restaurants even exist in the first place, considering kosher laws. I'd suggest proposing hooks that focus specifically on that aspect, as least as possible options for the promoter, as the mere concept of the Jewish dairy restaurant is the elephant in the room here.   • To clarify Viriditas's concern, the reason I asked for a new review is more out of check-and-balance reasons. Personally I have a preference ALT1 (the straightforward hook), but others may disagree and think that the Trotsky angle is more interesting (and personally I do also find it interesting). Normally what I could have done is to approve both hooks and leave it to the promoter, but given how torn I am over the options I thought bringing in a third-party editor to give their own opinion would also help reach a proper consensus. I'm really torn about what to write here. As a resident of the Bronx, I find ALT0 to be a wonderful hook. I had no idea Trotsky ever lived in the Bronx. The idea that I've literally walked down the block where he ate his meals just blows my mind. BTW, I found an ad for the Triangle Dairy Restaurant in the Daily Worker, https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1929/1929-ny/v05-n344-NY-feb-08-1929-DW-LOC.pdf, page 3, rightmost column. That is a great fact, though it's more about B&H Dairy. While I did include it in that article, I omitted it from this one, though not intentionally. We could shove it into this article but I'm not sure that I like it better than the Trotsky hook or the Narutolovehinata5 special edition straightforward hook. Sorry to butt in, but the article isn't good enough for DYK. At first, I intended to remove the stub tag (we don't run stubs at DYK) but it's arguably still a stub. There is nothing outside of his political career; no early life, education, or what he did before politics. The article therefore fails WP:DYKCOMPLETE. Secondly, the date and place of birth are both unreferenced and that's a violation of WP:BLP. Thirdly, about half the article deals with controversies and that feels unbalanced; hence it fails WP:NPOV. There's a lot more work required to get this ready. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news. The article is fully supported by the Burmese source, and even without the 'ancient-buddhist-texts' reference, it remains comprehensive. The Burmese source, Kutha Zatdaw (PDF), Myanmar Alin (in Burmese), 16 June 2005, p. 10, is sufficient to cover the entire article. An article from the Myanmar Academy of Arts and Science is also an additional reference that can be used to verify the entire content of the article. If you're unable to verify the Burmese source, please feel free to seek assistance from other Burmese-speaking editors. And I added more English source and page numbers.
Regarding the image, the Buddhist temple artwork is not copyrighted, which is a common case in Myanmar. Buddhist Jataka tales are often depicted in many temples and monasteries across Myanmar. As I’m not an expert on copyright, I’m not sure how to explain it very well. I do know that Myanmar is not a freedom of panorama country, but the Aung Myin Dipa Temple in Patheingyi was established around 1880 by Min Dipa, a minister and court official in King Thibaw's court. The paintings in the temple seem old, but there is no indication of the year they were made or the owner’s name. So, they could be considered under the PD-Myanmar license. However, I don’t want to delay or cause any arguments, so it’s fine to promote my DYK without the photo. I’m withdrawing the photo for now. Pls kindly review. Thanks! It simply states a basic fact that even I, someone obsessed with trains to the point they're in my username, do not find particularly interesting. Fortunately, there are some things in the article that we can use to support a better hook. I was drawn to the sentence "The Cannonball gained a reputation for parties that frequently occurred on the Friday night train outbound from Milwaukee. Passengers brought aboard drinks to share, a band played, and the train often held at intermediate stops to replenish beer and ice."
Based on that sentence, here's my proposed hook: "... that despite being an ordinary commuter train, the Cannonball was often the site of parties with a live band and drinks on Friday nights?"

I'll probably have to cite WP:DYKHOOKSTYLE here: don't assume everyone worldwide is familiar with your subject. And for what it's worth, I made a bit of an informal survey about this on Discord, and the three editors who responded said they didn't know who Thorpe is. Note that my thoughts about the hook are independent of the survey; in fact, I made the survey because I wanted to know if American editors might find the hook interesting and to check my own thoughts. As for the nomination itself, the safest option here is probably to try a completely different angle. While ALT1 is arguably a better option, as you said, it loses some of the punch with the additional context. Thorpe is no Lionel Messi or Michael Jordan to warrant the angle, methinks. I think that's a better hook, but I'm not sure if it will pass scrutiny. DYK usually wants quotes in quote hooks to be attributed whenever possible, but adding an attribution to the hook would probably weaken the article's punch. It might be a good idea to seek opinions from other editors who are experts on wordsmithing like RoySmith, Theleekycauldron, or Launchballer. In any case, I'd suggest dropping any hook that directly mentions Jim Thorpe per WP:DYKHOOKSTYLE and either having only ALT2 for consideration for now, or trying a different angle. But that is not clear from the short quote about Pope Urban in the 11th century and then... Martin Luther? Did Luther called or tried to justify some genocide? I'd ask for that section to be expanded, clearly stating who said what, and in particular, who might have tried to justify genocide. Hi Narutolovehinata5, the "weird spelling" in question is the Americanist phonetic notation that is used for Indigenous North American languages. Like many terms in the languages of the Pacific Northwest Coast, məθkʷəy̓ is not "romanized" in the traditional sense because they still use Latin characters and contemporary inclusions of the notation are often unedited, such as "ʔálʔal Café" rather than "All-all Cafe" I will provide some examples of such:
For further reading, here is a quote from the University of British Columbia on the matter: "In the 1970’s, the Musqueam community began their journey towards language revitalization, and formally adopted the North American Phonetic Alphabet (NAPA). NAPA allows the sounds of hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ to be more accurately conveyed in writing. The symbols that may be unfamiliar to you, including ə, q̓, θ, xʷ, and more have corresponding phonetics that you can learn in order to pronounce written hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓."
There is no "standard" transliteration, most English language sources refer to the plant as məθkʷəy̓ with no alteration. The article title was based on the one that Wayne Suttles employed in his 2004 Musqueam Reference Grammar, but there are multiple ways to transliterate this term without a standardized form, nor is there much of a need to, as the base of the notation are Latin characters. To my understanding Narutolovehinata5, the Americanist phonetic notation is (to a degree) the Latin alphabet, and I'm sure there have been instances where letters such as Þ or ð have made their way into DYK before. For the record, I am comfortable with adjusting it if at the end of the day it is in violation of DYK guidelines, but I thought it might be good to have my thoughts on the matter before jumping the gun.     @Bagumba: I think "selling KFC" is not incorrect, but it is a bit awkward. He ran a KFC, which sold chicken, and he ran Polly's Pies, which sold pies. We wouldn't say "selling KFC and Polly's Pies". The phrase "selling KFC" implies, to me, selling a company. Subjectively, as a person who isn't so into basketball, its more interesting to hear that a person broke a record themselves than that they were coached by someone renowned.     So according to the sources, Israel was certainly involved and probably partly enabled her escape, but also the security situation in Gaza had actually delayed her rescue.

In particular, Sankar Montoute and It's OK I'm OK only discuss the hook, and Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone only mentions length and "well-sourced" in its approval, which is not adequate. I have also adjusted both hooks to change the italics into quote marks; I also discovered that the article failed to properly identify the actual quotes for those hooks, which is technically a copyvio, so I have adjusted it accordingly. This meant adjusting the quotes to cover more material. (In once case, two apostrophes together were used in the article rather than the double-quote character, causing italics there rather than visible " marks at the beginning and end of the quote.) A GBooks result offered a tidbit on an entity called VP2LO, a shortwave outlet that in the years ahead evolved into the Kittitian national broadcaster--a topic I broke ground on back in my early days on WP. (I was lucky to save it from A7 during its December 2007 launch--barely.) Face it, WP is still in dire need of better and more extensive coverage on Caribbean media.
    Apologies if I used a thesis here, but regrettably, it's the only source mentioning this factoid--anywhere--as far as Google's aware (WP:AGF). Meanwhile, as I type, Doc Taxon at WP:RX has been taking care of the last three bits we need to get this finished.

    • The article was new enough and long enough at the time of the nomination. I didn't find any close paraphrasing. A QPQ has been fully completed. As the article was only featured on RD rather than as a blurb, it is still eligible for DYK. The image is properly licensed and is suitable at its resolution.
    The hook doesn't meet WP:DYKCITE at this time as the footnote supporting it comes later in the paragraph than it should. The hook is referenced to a French source so AGF, although a Google Translate translation seems to verify the information. Apart from the sourcing, my only real concern (since the hook is interesting) is the language in both the hook and the article might not meet the guidelines on words to avoid in articles, specifically WP:PEACOCK since they're arguably more flowery. Rather than using "silenced", or the lead section's current wording, perhaps it may be toned down a little more to suit the guidelines. I understand that "erstickt" means "suffocated" and believe that "silenced" is almost too harmless compared to that. Other options from my translator are "suppressed" and "stifled", the latter being a word I never heard before and therefore hesitate to use. If you say it is better, I'll believe you.     • The article was new enough and long enough at the time of the nomination. I did not find any close paraphrasing. Sources are mostly in Indonesian so assuming good faith for them, although the PhD dissertation is in English and the stuff it verifies is verified. I will leave the choice in hook to the promoter. There are just two issues, one for each hook. For ALT0, I'm not actually sure if a PhD dissertation is a suitable source in this case, although it's not giving an exceptional claim perhaps it might be usable.     Referring to WP:XINHUA, which you mentioned in your review, the quorum mentioned there reads "Caution should be exercised in using this source, extremely so in case of extraordinary claims on controversial subjects or biographies of living people. When in doubt, try to find better sources instead; use inline attribution if you must use Xinhua." Little mentioned in the Luo Xinhua article crosses the bar of "extraordinary claims", and what does cross that bar is specifically attributed to the source (with an indication that it is state-owned). He lived, he did something, he was detained, he was executed. Where these government sources have been used, I have been careful not to use their description of persons whom the CCP has no reason to like (for example, the conflict with Zhang Guotao is cited to Howard rather than the decidedly less neutral CCP sources, and discussion of Xifeng is cited predominantly to a Harvard University Press book). Likewise, I have deliberately excluded politically charged claims such as Luo's father being bankrupted by the high ROC taxes.
    As per WP:PARTISAN, "reliable sources are not required to be neutral, unbiased, or objective." WP:CONTEXTMATTERS clarifies that "Each source must be carefully weighed to judge whether it is reliable for the statement being made in the Wikipedia article and is an appropriate source for that content." In this case, the sources are used specifically for basic statements of biography. Where statements were extraordinary, such as Mao and Zhou specifically asking for Luo's release, it has been attributed to the source with an indication of the source's potential bias.

    Xinhua is, according to consensus, generally reliable for factual reporting except in areas where the government of China may have a reason to use it for propaganda, but this topic is exactly one where the Chinese government would have an interest in distorting its own history in order to make the CCP look better. Perhaps other reviewers would have a different opinion, but I don't think that Chinese government published sources should be cited so heavily. I wouldn't say it summarises the article, just the last few sentences. I can expand it further, I think at the moment it's at 1200 words. Are you sure the hook isn't okay?

    Thanks Hkeely. The length is now fine, article was created on time (22 October), sources used look to be reliable for the content and I found no issues with overly close paraphrasing, image is good (I trimmed the caption quite a bit). A couple of questions on sourcing:
    • I couldn't see in the Fox Carolina source where it said this was the only time the event had been cancelled?
    • Can you add a citation in the article for the last sentence of the first paragraph about the TV channels it has been broadcast on?

The cancelation information is because the contest started in 1992 and this would have been the 32nd annual event. Since there were 31 events prior, that adds up mathematically.     The issue is that the hook does arguably fail both DYKINT and DYKTRIM. Yes the NYT is prestigious, but a hook about a person being praised for doing their job doesn't really work as a hooky hook. It would be like having a hook on DYK saying "DYK that Lionel Messi was praised in the press for his performance during the World Cup final?" Yes a good accomplishment, but not necessarily what DYK is looking for. The other, probably more salient point here, is DYKTRIM: the hooks has several details that may distract from the main point of the hook (that she was praised for her role). DYKTRIM states don't be afraid to trim hooks of extraneous information and clauses. Even if DYKINT is subjective, DYKTRIM is less so.     You didn't answer my question: How about leaving the review to someone else? Remember? ALT0a: there's still no clue that this played in New York City (not Moscow), and not she is pictured, but she in the role. ALT1: That she appears as weightless and airy is well captured in the image, - no need to say it in quoted words. That she is a ballerina is also clearly visible. ALT2: The sheer length of time served doesn't say a word about that she was top both dancing and training, let alone being the chosen one for a U.S. tour.

    With the caveats that (a) I'm not terribly familiar with the social mores of DYK, and (b) I'm responding to a ping, so I'm not uninvolved:
    • If I recall correctly, NLH brought GA to ANI because they felt GA's blurbs were routinely too long and not interesting. And received really strong negative feeback for doing so. It seems suboptimal for NLH to continue to review GA's blurbs and complain they are too long and not interesting. Surely there are enough reviewers for someone else to review?
    • Interesting, in particular, is in the eye of the beholder, and NLH received feedback that their eye does not seem to match the overall DYK community.
    • It appears a hook should be around 150-160 characters, with an absolute max of 200. This one is 163 or 195 (not sure if you folks count spaces). That seems within range if DYK typically doesn't count spaces, and maybe in need of a trim if DYK usually does.
    • Since I'm semi-involved, I won't try to propose a shorter hook myself. The current one doesn't seem confusing, though, which I would think is more important than simple length.
    • There might be other things I'm not aware of, so if I've ignored something the DYK community considers important, take this with a grain of salt.
