Propaganda films

[edit]

I think we are getting a little too specific about the categories. I think Category:Nazi world War II propaganda films is a little redundant, we could just put the Nazi propaganda link there. Same with the Japanese cat.--Dudeman5685 23:12, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea, there. Thanks from me (a diehard interlinguist)! Almafeta 13:39, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Yes I did look at Interlingua some time ago, but I felt too much temptation to indroduce a full Romance grammar! I had my own inter-Romanic experiment once - the obligatory Lord's Prayer follows in my lashed-up language. What do you think?
Nostro padre que é en le cielo
Santificado seja tu nome.
Venga tu Reino.
Amen.
The other point is using vocabulary at odds with Romance practice - such as using attaccos rather than attentatos to refer to terrorist attacks, or to use the horribly laboured charpa de capite (seen on INTERLNG) rather than pannello de collo or even hijab (which seems international enough to me). One addition to the vocabulary I'd like to introduce - can I call a puppet government "un governamento fantoche"? (FR/ES/PT fantoche, IT fantoccio) GCarty 14:22, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Two questions re your own inter-Romance tongue: what does the x (laixes) mean?
It's pronounced "lashes" - the orthography is Catalan-inspired. It's a subjuctive of "to let" (cf. French tu laisses, Italian lasci) GCarty 16:15, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
My own tastes find it odd, because of the the way that the possessive adjective nostro sounds, but that's me.
And what do the accents mean -- stress change, or sound change?
Accents function as in Spanish. GCarty 16:15, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Also note that Interlingua didn't intend to be purely Romantic, although I sometimes replace Interlingua's verb rules with a faux-Romantic set to make it sound like an obscure European tongue.
Finally, regarding "fantoche": French uses fantoche, but Spanish uses títere -- if the interwiki links on puppet state are correct. For now, I'd keep it, but add the {{parola-non-official}} template to the top of the article. Almafeta 15:11, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
"Títere" is more common, but "Fantoche" is sometimes used too, at least if a Google search is anything to go by. GCarty 16:15, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Also, feel free to get your own account there! Almafeta 15:15, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Friendly suggestions

[edit]

Hi GCarty, I would just like to remind you to always leave an edit summary when making changes to articles. It really helps your fellow editors and only takes a few seconds.

The problem is that when I am changing categories for dozens of articles those "few seconds" add up! Are there any programs for changing categories in articles en masse, so that I don't omit edit summaries for "fast-fingered freddie" reasons? GCarty 19:15, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would also like to suggest that the minor edit tag might not be appropriate when you are deleting and adding categories in the article. It is really intended for minor changes such as fixing a spelling mistake. Best wishes -- FP <talk><edits> 02:30, July 26, 2005 (UTC)

Dinosaur cat

[edit]

I noticed you've put Category:Dinosaurs into Category:Prehistoric animals. This seems redundant to me because it's already in Category:Prehistoric reptiles, which is itself in Category:Prehistoric animals. If there's some pressing reason why it needs to be in both the parent and child cat then let me know (should probably note it on the Talk page actually), otherwise it seems pointless. Soo 16:18, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Some people regard dinosaurs as reptiles, while others regard them as a unique class of animals, with both reptilian and avian characteristics. I put Category:Dinosaurs into both Category:Prehistoric animals and Category:Prehistoric reptiles in order to accommodate both these viewpoints. GCarty 17:20, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CFD redirects

[edit]

Please don't use hard redirects in categories. There is a bug in the mediawiki software which causes these to work incorrectly. There is more information about this at Wikipedia:Categorization#Redirected_categories If a soft direct is necessary, use {{Category redirect|target category}}. Most times, though, if you are working on the cleanup section of WP:CFD, the soft directs are there so a bot will move the articles, so nothing needs to be done. --Kbdank71 15:41, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Battle of Tours

[edit]

whatever your faith, please do not vandalize the name of Emir Abdul Rahman Al Ghafiqi Abd al Rahman, or remove his name from the list of dead -- his life was sufficiently important in history that he deserved to be mentioned in the list of those killed. Your edits are ill-informed, hopefully you don't know better. If you do edit, please leave an explanation. Otherwise, as in this one, it is simply reverted. old windy bear 21:50, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I assume that you are not aware of the conventions for battleboxes - a dagger (†) beside a commander's name indicates he was killed in the battle. GCarty 08:30, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
no problem, however, you should have left a message in discussion, and his name still belongs in the causalty lists, as he was quite renowned in history -- most users do not know that the dagger indicates death in battle, and the information in the battlebox shows them at once that a significant personality of the times was killed. I had removed the dagger again, till i came here and read why, i then restored it, but left the Emir's name in the losses - which is also appropriate. I have been working on these articles for a year. I welcome any help, but don't know what someone is doing - like with the dagger - if they don't tell me, which is why I suggested leaving a note in discussion on any article when such is done. Cheers!old windy bear 09:53, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

GCarty I understood and agreed with your edit this morning returning the category to the proper place, since Tours took place during the great period of Islamic expansion, during their wars of conquest. But Carty, please, leave a note in discussion so that the guy whose edit you changed understands why! I started to do so, but decided instead to come back here, and ask you to. Your edit was historically correct, but people generally on these history articles explain such an edit, so the other party understands. You were correct on the dagger -- I did not know (Palmdogg is the battle and campaign box king; i compile the lists! -- but now that I do, all is well). But please, for the sake of avoiding editing wars, leave the guy an explanation on the discussion page? It also establishs that you know what you are doing, which you obviously do. This is not being smart with you, but an honest request to leave an explanation so the person who thought -- because Tours was a victory for the Chirstian forces opposing the Islamic Conquest, that it was not a part of the wars in that era -- understands that they were wrong. Thanks! old windy bear 17:10, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

GCarty Carty, you have still not explained your revert of an edit a user made in good faith, not understanding the nature of the battlebox, or why the person who thought -- because Tours was a victory for the Chirstian forces opposing the Islamic Conquest, that it was not a part of the wars in that era -- understands that they were wrong. If you don't start leaving an explanation, one that is sourced, your edits will be reverted. In this case, I happen to agree with you. But wikipedia rules dictate that when you revert - as you did with this -that you leave an explanation in the discussion area, so the person understands the logic of the revert, or leave such in the revert itself. You did neither. Please post it, or I will revert yours, and let the military project coordinator decide the matter. You are simply acting without any respect towards users editing in good faith. Please leave explanations!old windy bear 18:46, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

GCarty 1) the Battle of Tours is generally regarded as the turning point of the Muslim invasions of Western Europe, but it is not the end of them, as you would know if you studied the life of Charles Martel, or the Islamic Conquests -- invading forces were turned back again at River Berre and Narbonne by Charles Martel in 736-7; 2) the Muslim conquering presence in western Europe did not fully end until the retaking of the City of Narbonne by Charle's son, Pippin the Short. I reinstated the explanation placed at the Battle of Tours. if you feel this is wrong, feel free to discuss it on the explanation page, or talk to user:Kirill the project coordinator for the Military Project. In any event, your history was incorrect that Tours signaled the end of Muslim invasions of Europe, though western historians, and Muslim historians of that era, regarded it as the "turning point" of said invasions.old windy bear 15:08, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe I understand why you've been encountering resistance to your utilization of this category and it is due to what seems to be a blanket utilization of it. American propaganda film cats

[edit]

I agree that the category needed to be split up, but may I suggest some modifications in the new arrangement?

First I think that the Right and Left cats should include domestic as well as foreign policy, as the two can become very intertwined, as late experience has shown, and the terms "anti-communist" and "anti-fascist" doesn't adequeatly cover the respective foreign outlooks. Would an anti-Vietnam war film, for instance, really belong under the anti-fascist cat, or a left wing cat for that matter?

This is what I propose

  • WWII films (a fairly distinct genre)
  • General Left and right wing films
  • Vietnam era films (both anti and pro, left and right. The two are not mutually exclusive.)
  • Drug and social hygiege films
  • anti-communist

What do you think?--Dudeman5685 20:02, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Almost no Americans were outright pro-communist or pro-fascist, so I'd reserve the labels "anti-communist" and "anti-fascist" for relatively non-partisan films. As for Vietnam, either have a specific category, or create a new category for anti-war films (also including films opposing other wars, such as Why We Fight (2005 film)), while putting the pro-war films in the "anti-communist" category. Redirect of Anti-Christian

[edit]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Anti-Christian, by Graeme Bartlett (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Anti-Christian is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Anti-Christian, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Sorry about that, but could you please explain why a communist party is not considered far-left? --GCarty (talk) 18:34, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For ideological reasons, it's Eurocommunist. It's not trotskyst. And anyways, the French far-left refers to trots, anti-liberals etc. But mostly for technical reasons. It co-operates a lot with the PS or Greenies. Most of their MPs were elected without PS candidates opposing them, their lists in regional elections (if they run one) always rallies the Socialists if they're at 10%. --Petrovic-Njegos (talk) 21:25, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If "far-left" in the French context means "Trotskyist", might it not be a good idea to make this explicit in the table? --GCarty (talk) 10:42, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Zoomandbored.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 21:32, 26 August 2008 (UTC). We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Miniten. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

File:Whywefight30vs200.png needs authorship information.

[edit]
Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:Whywefight30vs200.png appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.

Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided),authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).

If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which:{{subst:usernameexpand|GCarty}} will produce an appropriate expansion,

or the {{own}} template..

Deletion nomination

[edit]

I have nominated Krugersdorp Standard Bank robbery for deletion. Please provide references. Chutznik (talk) 17:59, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Al-Faran requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. The article Tankie has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No sources cited, term at best belongs in wikitionary.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Category:Explosive weapons

[edit]

I've removed Category:Explosive weapons from Category:Weapons (reverting your edit) because Explosive weapons is already in Weapons, via the categories Ammunition, Firearms, Projectile weapons, and WP:SUBCAT says that "A page or category should rarely be placed in both a category and a subcategory or parent category (supercategory) of that category".

Possibly something else is wrong with the category tree - I don't know, but currently the inclusion directly in Category:Weapons is redundant. Mitch Ames (talk) 11:45, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to delete this category, as its name was incorrect: the category seems to have been re-created at the correct location Category:Curiohaus trials executions. I've also linked this corrected English-language category to its German-language equivalent, replacing the category to be deleted. GCarty (talk) 17:21, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Notice

The article Transfare has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not notable. No secondary sources on a regional transport ticket type. Very out of date. Not a single reference and one of the oldest citation needed gags on Wikipedia.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
