http://roadsidegeorgia.com is an excellent resource on the state, particularly for historical and current information on Georgia counties, and an external link for all 159 of them. See for example, http://roadsidegeorgia.com/county/hall.html

Milton County

[edit]

I think the comment about people wanting to re-establish Milton County implies that they don't want the money to go to black people. If this is what was meant then a source stating such should be referenced. If it is not what was meant it should be edited. Any opinions?

I agree. The statement, “The reasoning behind this is that the northern sections of Fulton County are among the most affluent in the state, and residents want to stop tax revenues from going to the poorer (and more heavily black) areas of South Fulton to be spent,” is inflammatory and gives only one side of the issue. The other side is local control. County governments should have relatively uniform concerns of the citizens. North Fulton is more concerned with quality of life while South Fulton is more concerned with poverty. Each should have their own county governments. The state of Georgia should be the entity to shunt tax money to help the poverty issue, not another county.

I also agree. There is a certain bias in the statement and it should be revised.

So I wasn't the only one who thought that, too? I am sure it's true. We shouldn't ignore racism in America. But, it isn't really a good way to put it for it being an encyclopedia.

County government in the United States

[edit]

Hello, Georgia county mavens! To defuse the edit war that has started at Category:County government in the United States, I'd appreciate some additional input on the topic of whether U.S. counties are (1) a level of local government or (2) an arm of state government. Discussion thus far is on my User talk page at User_talk:Orlady#County_government, but we could move it to a content-oriented talk page if desired. --Orlady (talk) 00:33, 18 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello GA. I am the other side of the edit war. My claim is that although county officials may be elected or appointed locally (i.e. not statewide), the actual county government itself is an arm of the state government. This is consistent with the powers they exercise (elections, law enforcement, etc.). If we could have some academically informed input, I would appreciate it, because the general impression and intuition that people have is that county government is "local government," but to those who actually study political science formally, the difference is known. The compromise that I propose is the persons should be categorized under "local politicians" while the offices should be categorized under "state government." I have posted this issue to WikiProject United States, and WikiProject Politics. Please take your input to one or the other so I don't have to have 50 discussions. Greg Bard (talk) 01:28, 18 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

User:Gregbard started discussion of this matter at User_talk:Orlady#County_government. Please don't start a whole new discussion at some WikiProject page. If there is a desire to move the discussion, let's copy the pre-existing discussion to the new location. --Orlady (talk) 02:29, 18 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

County maps

[edit]

What's going on with counties maps not showing an outline of the actual state? See for example File:Map of Georgia highlighting Atkinson County.svg, which, at least for me, only shows the shape of the county in red, there is no outline of the state of Georgia. Any help appreciated. Does not appear to be unique to Georgia. Dmoore5556 (talk) 19:24, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
