Birmingham Yardley and Yardley, West Midlands
[edit]You seem to have merged an article about a constituency with one about a 'formal district'. I think they need to be kept separate, linked perhaps via a disambiguation article. Birmingham Yardley seems to be the appropriate full name for the constituency, if not for the district. Also, please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK Parliamentary Constituencies. Laurel Bush 11:31, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC).
- All the other Birmingham constituencies are already held on the page for the geographical district (see Erdington, Edgbaston) (not my doing by the way). I was bringing Yardley into line with the others. Unlike in some other cities (e.g Wolverhampton South West, all Birmingham's constituency names relate (more or less) to real places. Obviously feel free to 'unmerge', but in that case you might want to do the same for all the other constituencies in B'ham for the sake of consistency. IMO, as each constituency corresponds to a 'real place' it seems unnecessary to have a separate article rather than to disambiguate on the page as is already the case. Valiantis 14:03, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I dont know Birmingham (much) but I have a UK political interest in Yardley (the consitiuency). Also I am working on constituency articles more generally. And articles about local government wards, committee areas, etc. Histories of electoral areas (and of towns, counties, etc) may somteimes coincide, but also they can be very divergent. I am about to have a look at Erdington and Edgbaston. Laurel Bush 15:46, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC).
- My feeling is to keep the B'ham constituencies disambiguated from the geographical areas on the same page (as is currently the case), rather than to create a substub for the constituencies that says nothing more than Birmingham Wherever is a parliamentary constituency. The MP is Bob Jones.' If and when there is sufficient info added to the pages to merit a separate article on the constituency (e.g. historical results, demographics), then it might be 'spun off'. Of course my rationale is to keep consistency on the Brum pages - yours is clearly different, so go ahead and change if you think appropriate. (By which I mean, I won't revert!) Valiantis 23:47, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I have created a number of constituency articles with the intention of at least recording results at the next general election. They may be stubs now, but they will grow with time, even if nobody gets round to adding what is already history. Also, I am not sure that the boundaries of Birmingham constituencies are exactly those of area-committee districts. If they are so now, this is quite likely to change in the future. Thinking perhaps I should copy this discussion into Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK Parliamentary Constituencies. It raises issues which should be of interest to others. Also, please see Birmingham Hodge Hill (constituency). Would you want to merge it with an article about the area-committee district? Laurel Bush 10:07, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC).
- The articles I've referred to are not just 'area-committee' articles. They are placename articles. There have only been area-committees in B'ham for about 4 years, but the places have histories often going back to Domesday Book and this is referred to in both the articles I referred you to. Perhaps they need to be re-written to make this clearer. As for the Birmingham Hodge Hill (constituency) article, I don't think this is correctly named. The place is called Hodgehill, it would be Hodgehill, Birmingham or Hodgehill, West Midlands if there was a need to distinguish it from the placename article of another place called Hodgehill. Birmingham Hodgehill is only the name of a constituency, so it doesn't need the (constituency) element - IMO - to disambiguate. (Same would apply to all constituencies with non-ambiguous names).
- As for the boundaries of area-committees and constituencies - these were identical originally, but changed a little as of the last local elections. I believe the constituency boundaries are up for review next year (there has been local consultation recently). However, I must stress the articles Erdington, Perry Barr, Ladywood etc. are general placename articles, not just area-committee articles. I was about to suggest that if you plan on setting up stubs for each constituency, then perhaps the placename article can link to them by changing the bold text to a link, but I note that you've done that already. Great minds think alike? :) Valiantis 14:26, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I did not myself create the Hodge Hill constituency article (but I did recently expand it) and there is a school of thought to the effect that (constituency) should be in the title of each and every constituency article, whether or not disambiguation is really necessary. I dont agree with this particular school of thought. Laurel Bush 12:20, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC).

Federal Ministries in Germany
[edit]Hello Valiantis, I noticed you've been editing the articles about the Federal Ministries in Germany. I think a few changes should be made in the way the Ministries, and the Ministers are covered. First: The table in the article about the Cabinet of Germany should be expanded to include "Federal Ministry for..." and "Federal Minister for..." Second: There should be articles for every Federal Ministry and Federal Minister. The articles about the Ministry should cover the roles and responsibilities, history, etc of the ministry. The articles about the Federal Minister should include a list of the past (and the current of cours) ministers.
What do you think? --Carabinieri 20:57, 6 September 2005 (UTC)
- Posted on User talk:Carabinieri
- Hi, in response to your message on my talk page: - I agree every ministry needs an article; the same goes for each minister. I think you've summarised what both sets of articles need. However, I don't think the table in Cabinet of Germany needs a direct link to the ministries (if I understand what you're suggesting) as it's a table of cabinet ministers.
- I've only got a passing interest/knowledge in this area. The stub I added for Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (Germany) was to fill-in a red-link in an article I was cleaning up on the Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien. I noticed that some of the ministries had been miscategorised in Category:German Cabinet so I moved them to Category:German Ministries and did a little other tidying up.
- If you've got plans - go ahead. They seem to be on the right lines IMO. Valiantis 18:51, 8 September 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for taking a look at the translated article of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf. I think the article has improved tremendously.
Greetings,
Thanks

I've wanted to do this for a long time, but only was reminded today: Thanks for your great work in the German/English translation department, especially smoothing over my translations (when I read them, they sound perfectly alright (for me), but after you've gone over them: 1st class).

Wiener Moderne
[edit]First of all thank you for helping with the proof-reading of all the articles I translated. I can help you with the translation of the Wiener Moderne if you want, or we can split it up if you want and exchange? Let me know, glad to help... Gryffindor 15:08, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

- Hi Gryffindor and thank you for the flower. I'd welcome some input on the Wiener Moderne article, but I've decided against a straight translation (although this would be quicker!) as I think the de:Wiener Moderne German-language article is a little decontextualised and also lacks a clear structure. I've already mapped out a possible structure on the page, but before I write more I want to do a little background reading and I'm not likely to get that done earlier than this weekend. I am intending to use some content from the German article, so I may have translation queries. Perhaps you might like to add comments on the article talk page as I begin to fill in the blank sections - or, of course, add directly into the article!-Valiantis 19:50, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
- Sure thing, you've been doing great work so far. Would it help to maybe translate the whole article first as it is, and then over the course of time you can play around with the sections and add stuff that you find? Gryffindor 20:45, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

Irish British category
[edit]Hi I'm not really bothered about the naming of this category but I think there is value in showing that Irish people and thir descendants have contributed to life in Great Britain, would you object to renaming it British Irish people? Thanks Arniep 14:53, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for your support on the rename. I still think its a bit unfortunate I can't include people like Peter O'Toole and Todd Carty who, although born in Ireland moved to England at an early age, and Terry Wogan, Henry Kelly and Dermot Murnaghan who have spent much of their life in and are mostly only famous in Great Britain (many of those are actually in British categories) . Also Tom Paulin who was born in England but grew up in Belfast, spent most of his adult life in England, but I don't think his parents were Irish so I can't include him under this new name. Oh well Arniep 23:24, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
- Hi sorry to bother you again. I have realised there is a snag with name which I proposed a few days ago Category:Britons of Irish descent as I intended the category to refer to people of note in Great Britain only, not Northern Ireland. I would prefer Category:Irish diaspora in Great Britain as this would avoid the possible inclusion of a huge amount of Northern Ireland people (as they are all British citizens) which wasn't the intention for the category. I have three supporters for this so far, If you agree to the new name I'd appreciate a vote or comment at Wikipedia:Categories for deletion#Category:Irish British people to Category:Irish-British people Category:Britons of Irish descent Thanks Arniep 18:31, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
Irish British eureka moment
[edit]Hi Valiantis I think I've finally worked out the best solution to resolve the disagreement on this category. We should split this category into Category:People of Irish descent in Great Britain, and Category:Irish people in Great Britain for people who live in Great Britain who call(ed) themselves Irish (whether they were born or grew up in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Irelandor born to ex pats abroad who now live in Great Britain). I would appreciate if you could support the new proposal at Wikipedia:Categories for deletion#Category:Irish British people to Category:Irish-British people Category:Britons of Irish descent Category:Irish diaspora in Great Britain. Thanks Arniep 14:01, 30 October 2005 (UTC)

The article Zeitgeist has a bit of content translated from its German equivalent article, and it has been claimed by an anon user the translation isn't accurate. Perhaps you could look into it and fix before the misinformation spread further. The content is very small and it won't take too much time. Thanks. --BorgQueen 15:58, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
That old chestnut: Irish-Scots
[edit]I'm afraid it's come up again...
There's a vote to delete the category, and the Irish-Scots stub, which I created (granted it's pretty poor at mo, but IMO needs improved, not deleted).
There's still a category "Irish-Scots" and there are twenty names on it.
The Ulster Scots page mentions "Irish-Scots" and explains how they're quite distinct.
I'm most definitely Irish-Scots, both parents being Irish, but I don't understand the problem with Irish-Scots regarding how far you go back, one or two parents etc. Like Ronald Reagan gets to be Irish-American and Scottish-American...like, how far does he go back?
And what about African-Americans - some of them go back three or four hundred years before they last "saw" Africa?
Don't really understand the fuss between "Irish-Scots" or "Scottish People of Irish Descent"... I mean, are we gonna start saying that Irish-Americans have to call themselves "American People of Irish Descent", and are we gonna have "American People of African Descent"...
Silly sausages....
Please add your vote to the vote for deletion?

hi Valiantis,

First of all I want to thank you for your great job on translating article Czech Silesia from German :) However I have some objections to naming old Austrian Silesia with the term "Czech Silesia" - I included my opinion in Talk:Czech Silesia - and if noone would be oppose I will change quite deeply present article. I already add a note that Lach spoke is not the only spoke used at the territory of Cieszyn Silesia (I'm the native speaker of Cieszyn Silesian dialect so I know what I'm talking about ;). The Lach (here so called lacki - read latsky) is spoken in neighbourhood of Ostrava and Frydek-Mistek, most of inhabitants of Cieszyn Silesia speak Cieszyn Silesian, commonly considered a dialect of Polish (especially at Polish site - which in present article is also called "Czech Silesia" - and what is quite hurtfull fore some people from here). I guess article at de:-wiki has the same mistakes, however I'm not able to inform they without language skills. Cheers, D_T_G (PL) 12:54, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks. I have changed those 3 words into most of it's land belonged to Austrian Silesia (...) which, I think, precisize it better ;) Cheers, D_T_G (PL) 19:56, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
NI cats
[edit]Hi. I don't know if its an automatic process that the sub-cats are renamed. But this might not be appropriate in some cases. I cite Category:Politics of Northern Ireland as an example (although this is a super-cat itself I think, you get the idea I'm sure). --Mal 19:42, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
Film language
[edit]I did not follow a discussion to rename the film categories (deletions were not "deletions" per se but it is because you cannot move categories like you can articles. You must delete and remake.) I moved them all because if you looked at Category:Films by language at the time of my doing this it was overwhelmingly "Category:XXX language films" so I changed all "Films in XXX" to the other format. The same goes for "Welsh-language" to "Welsh language" since I noticed how "French language", "Spanish language" etc. didn't have that hyphen. So, I was merely trying to normalize the category and I hadn't seen any discussion. If you want them all changed to something it will be a pretty easy bot action... my only request is uniformity... which is what I was trying to do and I apparently wrongly assumed that the majority was the proper convention. I am not sure why "Films in XXX" is better than "XXX language films" (hypen or not) As someone pointed out in that CfD we have Category:Operas by language, Category:Poets by language, Category:Songs by language, Category:Magazines by language, Category:Telenovelas by language, Category:Literature by language, Category:Newspapers by language, Category:Media by language, Category:Vocalists by language, Category:Writers by language all use XXX language XXX style... some use hyphens but not the majority... I think these should all be consistent so if we're going to change them we should change all of these categories.... normalize hyphen use and the like. Also, is Chinese a specfic case because it is not a spoken language but it automatically is Cantonese language films, or Mandarin language films? In any case... can we agree on consistency? Sorry for not discussing, though, I did not thik it was an issue. gren グレン 22:31, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
- Hi. Okay, so they should be changed to hyphenated... I think we agree there. I think the Chinese issue shouldn't be a big deal. If you look at Mandarin (linguistics) it puts Mandarin under the group "Chinese language"... same goes with Cantonese... the main dialects we'd be covering... so if it is an issue we should solve it however those articles solve it... which apparently is just keeping them classified under Chinese language... which, the article itself says language or language family. So, I think referring to them as Chinese language films should be fine since our article on Chinese language explains the complexities so it would be superfluous to say "Chinese languages". I think with Telegu films you're right... since you wouldn't have that mean done by Telegu people.... but, I think it gets more complex with Tamil... since that is also a landmass... but, I guess we'd have that be Tamil-Nadu films. So, that's fine as well. I don't think the idea for "shorter category names" is good bceause I think it's just a lot more clear with XXX-language film. So, if you want to set up bot requests for "foo-language films" I'd be all for that... if you raelly want to change to "Films in Chinese" then we need a broad consensus because we'd need to change a lot of categories for the sae of consistency. Hope that makes sense? gren グレン 03:53, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit]I voted on Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2006_January_16 in favour of the existing name, and I've just noticed that this came up again as Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2006_March_20 where you laid out a very convincing argument for the use of "Great Britain". You may note that in the first vote I commented re:Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the 1972 Summer Olympics "Note That page (and presumably all of the others) - was moved to that location from Great Britain at the 1972 Summer Olympics less than two weeks ago, so a move back is no great shakes. Ethnic categories, combination
[edit]Hello! I saw you nominate some ethnic categories which combinated "nations" with "ethnicity". I wholeheartedly agree with you, and would support any further vote for deletion (if I know about them). You may have a look at the French people page and at the relevant talk page if you wish: lots of French Wikipedians have had a very difficult time indeed explaining that France was a nation-state composed of individuals whose ethnic, religious, sexual or other political and philosophical opinions and memberships are, in theory, indifferent. In other words, as many other nation-states, France does not coïncide with one ethnic group. Tentatives to mix "nations" and "ethnic groups" together have led, to the past, to ethnic cleansing. If you know where we can discuss this confusion between "nations" and "ethnicities" in Wikipedia policies, I would be please to know about it. Regards, Lapaz 02:10, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
- On a pragmatic way I have to agree with you. I just don't feel it right to classify people according to alleged ethnic origins, because we don't categorize either people with blue eyes or brown hair. I totally agree with Hervé Le Bras, head of the INED demographic institute, who insists that "ethnicisation of social relations is not a 'natural' phenomenon, but an ideological one", but it's a shame I can't find a translation of his writings. As a demograph, he shows how the "ethnic" category is artificially composed. I don't even understand how the Jews category doesn't gives trouble (or does it?), since many Jews don't really like being "categorized" as Jews (although since WWII they have found increasingbly difficult to refuse their membership to the "Jew ethnic group"). As many French people, I agree with Ernest Renan that to belong to a group should first of all be a personal decision, and not an "objective" thing dependent on the language you speak or the "race" you belong to. But it is clear that this is a "fanatical" theory to uphold here. In anycases, if you give me direct links to the categories you list, I'll check them out. Cheers!Lapaz 13:12, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

German currency
[edit]I am writing this because I stumbled upon one of your edit on "Max Skladanowsky". Germany had many different currencies throughout the history. So I'd like to take this opportunity to present the quick cliff-note info.
- German gold mark 1873 - 1914
- German papiermark 1914 - 1923. The one that suffered hyperinflation.
- German rentenmark 1923 - 1924. Although reichsmark became the primary currency, rentenmark was still used side by side.
- German reichsmark 1924 - 1948.
Cheers. --Chochopk 07:34, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Cinema of Austria
[edit]As I saw you have great experience with translating articles from german to english - both articles concerning germany and austria. As I tried to create an article about Cinema of Austria I came to the borders of my english-knowledge. At the moment the article concerns dozens of mistakes - gramatically and typi... ermm... typically/typographicly? :-) Ok you see what I mean :-) I just asked myself if it could probably you who puts this article to his "to do" list or something like that to make the article look better? I would not expect you to translate the german version of this article in exactly that exact way as you did with the article Cinema of Germany - but the most important facts out of de:Österreichische Filmgeschichte would be great to can be found also in english. If you have no time or are not interested I understand, but I thought if I ask you it could not hurt :-) Thanks and cheers/greetings/bye -- Otto Normalverbraucher 05:34, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
the REAL name: Trentino-Alto Adige
[edit]So I did some research and checked with some pretty credible sources as to what they print, in ENGLISH, for the name of this region (and province) in Italy.
- Fodor's - a well recognized and respected name (and expert guide) has regional and local publications that show the region and local names of "Trentino-Alto Adige", "Alto Adige", and "Bolzano".
- Michelin - also expert in travel guides - has regional and local publications that show the region and local names of "Trentino-Alto Adige", "Alto Adige", and "Bozen".
- Rand McNally (name speaks for itself) has world, regional, and local publications that show the region and local names of "Trentino-Alto Adige", "Alto Adige", and "Bolzano".
- Streetwise Map's regional, and local publications show the region and local names of "Trentino-Alto Adige", "Alto Adige", and "Bolzano".
- Dorling Kindersley or "DK" - by far, probably the best travel guides available - has regional and local publications that show the region and local names of "Trentino-Alto Adige", "Alto Adige", and "Bolzano".
- Lonely Planet (the self-proclaimed largest independently-owned travel guide) regional, and local publications show the region and local names of "Trentino-Alto Adige", "Alto Adige", and "Bolzano".
- Hammond Map - a subsidiary of Langenscheidt Publishing Group (a privately-held German publishing company) - has regional and local publications that show the region and local names of "Trentino-Alto Adige", "Alto Adige", and "Bolzano".
As far as proof, I am quite sure that the above sources are credible enough, especially in the sense of geographical knowledge, expertise, and English-translation. Rarelibra 03:57, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Can you help verify translations of articles from German
[edit]Hello Valiantis,
Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from German to English Wikipedia?
This would involve evaluating a translated article on the English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original German article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:
There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including German , using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from German. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.
If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:
All you have to do, is compare the English article to the German article, and assess them "Pass" or "Fail" (the {{Pass}} and {{Fail}} templates may be useful here). (Naturally, if you feel like fixing an inaccurate translation and then assessing it, that's even better, but it isn't required.) Also please note that we are assessing accuracy not completeness, so if the English article is much shorter that is okay, as long as whatever has been translated so far is factually accurate.
If you can help, please {{ping}} me here to let me know. You can add your pass/fails above, right next to each link, or you may indicate your results below. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 06:53, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
