Pioneer Zephyr is featured article

[edit]

It official. Congratulations. I was glad to help refine your excellent work. This article had broader appeal than some very good railroad articles your have worked on. We also had the help of several writers with whom I have worked in other areas (IE American Civil War) who responded to my request to come take a look at it, and vote if they felt it was worthy. You work with DYK gave attention at the critical time as well. Bottom line: deserved success for you, and a great article in FA Transport section. Win-Win. Now back to work on the RR for you! <gr>

BTW, I have a nomination pending for admin (sysop). I know you (and I) are not into the power games. Still, its something I would/will feel good about. Currently, the votes are favorable for me. Especially because I think your work is gaining respect, I'd appreciate your support if your feel it is warranted. Here is the link: Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Vaoverland Mark in Richmond Vaoverland 17:57, Mar 2, 2005 (UTC)

I wanted to add my congratulations--one week from nothing to FA is quite impressive. Since I tend to have a short attention span I mostly stick with 'housekeeping' edits and the occasional short stub, so I particularly appreciate editors like you that really dig in and build quality, comprehensive, interesting articles. Great work. Niteowlneils 01:54, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)

PS I forgot to say I was sorry I didn't get my intended support vote added in time, but since it was promoted without it, I guess all's well that ends well. Niteowlneils 04:48, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday! I saw your birthday listed on meta. I hope you have a great day. SWAdair | Talk 07:30, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

User:Vaoverland - administrator

[edit]

Thank you for supporting my appointment as an administrator. I appreciate the pat on the back this represents. It felt nice to read the comments during the voting. Please let me know if you see something I should be doing as admin, as I intend to be fairly passive unless it is clear I should do otherwise. Thanks. Mark in Richmond. Vaoverland 20:06, Mar 6, 2005 (UTC)

PZ models

[edit]

I just knew you would find content for that section! It isn't much about trains, although he did the Walt Disney thing selling to train pax in Indianapolis as a child, but if you get a chance, my Carl G. Fisher article is a FAC. If you find it worthy, I'd appreciate your support. <gr>. Mark. Vaoverland 21:05, Mar 11, 2005 (UTC)

FAC

[edit]

Hi, thanks very much for correcting my horribly messed up nomination of Comet Hyakutake for FAC! Must remember to use the preview button, and not do things in a hurry cos I'm supposed to be doing real work right now :) Worldtraveller 14:27, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Franklin B. Gowen

[edit]

I see that Franklin B. Gowen is now a featured article! Looks like you've done it again. Advance token to Reading Railroad. Congrats. Vaoverland 19:17, Mar 19, 2005 (UTC)

Amtrak routes

[edit]

Hi Slambo, would you please take a peek at the controversy at Wikipedia:WikiProject Trains/Strategy, I would appreciate your feedback on this - I'll be willing to go with whatever consensus emerges there. Cheers Fawcett5 21:18, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Pioneer Zephyr makes the front page!

[edit]

Slambo, congratulations, I just noticed that Pioneer Zephyr is on the front page! Looks great! Fawcett5 02:39, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Adminship?

[edit]

Hi, are you interested in being an administrator? You've done a lot of good work and seem to be reasonably familiar with how things work around here, so I would be happy to nominate you if you're interested. Please let me know. --Michael Snow 18:06, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

There isn't any particular expectation that you're required to do anything (like watch Recent changes, protect pages, block vandals, stuff like that). If you do use the admin abilities, obviously you're expected to use them properly, with allowance for a reasonable learning curve, but really it's an additional set of tools, not additional duties. Of course it's best to have admins who are polite, reasonable, and friendly when dealing with other people. But the only way to get that is to pick editors who already have those qualities, which I think you do. Does that answer your question? --Michael Snow 21:11, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Okay, I've posted the nomination at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship. If you could go there to indicate whether you accept, that would be great. Also, there are a few standard questions people like to see the answers to, if you would take the time for that. I always feel like I should apologize for that, it really isn't supposed to be anything like a job interview, but they're helpful for people who may not have dealt with you directly before. --Michael Snow 22:13, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Vaoverland update

[edit]

It will be happy to support your nomination at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship. The most I do now as an admin is watch for vandalism. Reverting is a lot easier with the extra tools. I suspect that you would also be strong in that area. Anything on my watch list with changes from just an IP address I look at, and 50-60& need to be reverted. In almost every instance, I only revert obvious vandalism, as I don't like censorship. It would have helped you a lot through the day of Pioneer Zephyr on the main page.

As I'm sure you are following, I've been busy nursing Carl G. Fisher through the FAC process. It has suffered more from lack of votes than objections, and I had to stir up a couple of other users to take a look at it, but it has gotten a lot better through the ordeal. Thanks for support, including your recent comments. It is the oldest one on the FAC list. Unlike William N. Page, this one might be of broad enough interest to be a main page article one day.

I hope to go to the Virginian Railway Coalfield Seminar April 8-10. I am helping one of the authors of VGN-related books with the content of his presentation. He will speak about William Nelson Page and other topics. I am flattered to also be considered an author by these folks and hope to learn some new things to bring back to the WP articles. Here is the link if you need a little diversion from WP. http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/VirginianRailwayEnthusiasts/

Accident at WP:FAC

[edit]

There was an editing accident (probably MySQL error or cut-n-paste error) on Wikipedia talk:Featured article candidates that resulting in the page contents being duplicated. A number of edits had occurred by the time it was noticed, but I tried to preserve everything while removing duplicate material. Just in case, mosey on over and check if your vote stuck. If you have any questions, respond on my talk page. Thanks!

Congratulations!

[edit]

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 22:17, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Help request with page move

[edit]

Hi Sean, congrats on the promotion... and with your new-found powers, maybe you can help me out. I need admin assistance to undo an ill-considered page move that I did the other day. William Andrew Cecil Bennett should be renamed back to W.A.C. Bennett, but as a lowly grunt I cannot do it because of history on the redirect page... Fawcett5 15:43, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Railroad articles at DYK

[edit]

While I love your productivity and devotion, I think there's a bit too many of those railroad articles ending up on DYK at the moment (hence all the recent update notes). I'm afraid people will get enough from reading about trains soon. Could you perhaps nominate a little less of your own articles stick some time in finding ones by newbies for a few days, so we can encourage them to continue contributing and have a little more diversity for a while? -- Mgm|(talk) 21:24, Mar 31, 2005 (UTC)

  • Thank you! Just let me know if you nominate another one of your articles for FAC. If it's as good as Pioneer Zephyr, I'd be happy to support. Mgm|(talk) 21:35, Mar 31, 2005 (UTC)

Your Adminship, new perk for WP administrators

[edit]

Congratulations! As of tomorrow, all Wikipedia administrators and bureaucrats have been added to the Line of Succession to the throne of The Duchy of Grand Fenwick, which also results (through treaty) with a role as the titular monarch for the democratic island nation of San Serriffe. You made it just in time for this new perk. I also think you will enjoy the article on modeling the railroads of San Serriffe at this link: Globo Del Ojo - Tamar Valley Group. Mark in Richmond.
