I deleted to the referenec to Johannesburg International Airport in the proof of the agglomeration of the two regions as it does not really proove anything. O'Hare International Airport is functionally in the city of Chicago, but is not integrated into the city in any way, while Keflavík International Airport is located in completely seperate city and region in Iceland, yet is the airport for Reykjavík.
Merge
[edit]I've suggested a merge with Ekurhuleni_Metropolitan_Municipality, as the East Rand has effectively become that municipality. If no-one objects, I'll merge them. Anyone interested can check out the South African Municipalities WikiProject -Kieran 12:41, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
- This idea has some merit, but we need to be careful, because political boundaries do change. The abolition of cross-border municipalities, for example has led to parts of the West Rand being transferred from the West Rand District municipality, in Gauteng, to the Southern District Muncipality in the North-West.
- I don't know how likely it is that Ekurhuleni will have its boundaries changed, but if it does, it may be awkward for us to have to differentiate the two again at a later stage, if parts of the East Rand are moved to another municipality. Therefore I do not concur with the merge.168.209.98.35 19:31, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
- Also, I was recently talking to someone who lives in Edenvale, and he was complaining about how the Joburg Municipality "took over" land to the north (near Modderfontein?) that previously was part of the town (which is on the East Rand and is now part of Ekurhuleni ). I don't know how accurate his claim was, but if it is accurate, it would be another (weaker) indication that we need to be careful about the merge, since parts of the East rand could actually be part of other municipality. 168.209.98.35 21:29, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
- Merge I agree with Kierano. The East Rand municipality has effectively become Ekurhuleni. Whether or not all the areas that were considered part of the East Rand are included isn't really the point - it's an administrative region, and has changed names. If they are to be differentiated then the article on the East Rand should not be about the municipality, but simply the term (in a similar form to "Highveld" or "Midlands") Joziboy 11 May 2006, 07:59 (UTC)
- Actually it was not an admininistrative region before the Municipality was created. There was no "East Rand Municipality". It was a collection of towns on the Eastern part of the Rand (a geographic region rather than a political entity). Each town had its own municipality. The Ekurhuleni municipality was created more recently, and has never experienced a name change. 196.209.254.2 08:53, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
- Since the East Rand is not and has not been an administrative unit I don't think it should be merged with Ekurhuleni which is an administrative unit. The two things are not the same; the East Rand is a geographical name without precise definitions. There is a tendency to confuse administrative units with geographical names and the latter tend to be more stable as they are not created, abolished, renamed or reorganised. Modderfontein
[edit]Modderfontein was part of Edenvale, but became part of the City of Johannesburg municipality (since 2000). [1]. It is therefore clear that the East Rand and Ekurhuleni are not exactly the same.Park3r (talk) 06:03, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
Future Merge Proposals
[edit]In the event that another merge proposal (there have been a few of these already) for Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and the East Rand is created, it should be remembered that political and municipal boundaries change regularly in South Africa. The abolition of cross-border municipalities, the future incorporation of Kungwini Local Municipality into the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality and the proposed annexation of Midrand from the City of Johannesburg to the City of Tshwane, show that the boundaries of municipalities change constantly, so keeping the East Rand region article separate from the Ekurhuleni municipality article would be prudent. One need look no further than the mess on Wikipedia created by the reduction of numbers of Johannesburg Regions to see what happens when geographical areas and administrative units are conflated.Park3r (talk) 10:09, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
- @Park3r, I see that the "Area" in "this article" is showing the same figure as the "Area" in the Ekurhuleni article. Is that how it is supposed to be, considering that in "this article", Linksfield and Modderfontein are mentioned in the first paragraph as being part of the East Rand? GeographicAccountant (talk) 18:27, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Park3r, I've noticed that "every statistic" (Population; Race; Language) in this article's Infobox is data for Ekurhuleni, which means that the data for Linksfield, Modderfontein & any other relevant place is not included in the Infobox content & yet we chose to include them in the towns mentioned in the first paragraph.
- How would you recommend these figures be edited in this case, since we have clearly said that "Ekurhuleni" & "East Rand" are not exactly the same thing? GeographicAccountant (talk) 18:32, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
- If they’re not accurate, they should be removed. Park3r (talk) 21:31, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
- I think, Just like the way the West Rand article is at present, this article should not have an infobox. I'll remove it. GeographicAccountant (talk) 21:40, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
- If they’re not accurate, they should be removed. Park3r (talk) 21:31, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
