According to the Cultural History Museum's guide at Ondini, a Thami Richard Mhlophe, Ondini was the name of original village (royal kraal) destroyed by the British on 4 July 1879 and its meaning is high or elevated position which it certainly is, looking out over the plains below, which include the now town of Ulundi situated around the former battlefield of Ulundi on the Mahlabatini flats. According to him Ulundi in a corruption of the original name Ondini, and was first used by a trader that established a shop on the plains below and near the former battle field.

As an aside it is noted that the isiZulu or Zulu word "omndeni" means "of the family"; and it could mean it was the village of the number one family!

Pietermaritburg (the original Natal capital) re-took over the capital status from Ulundi when political power in KwaZulu-Natal changed from the Inkata Freedom Party (IFP) to the African National Congress (ANC). 41.240.44.140 (talk) 07:56, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Do not really like the first para - was the capital ? The kings kraal was there - capital is so culturally inappropriate.

Ulundi is regarded as the traditional capital of Kwa-Zulu-Natal in the same way as Bulawayo is regarded as being the traditional capital of Matabeleland. - (Aidan Work 07:15, 20 December 2005 (UTC))[reply]

Why did Ulundi lose this in 2004? Loganberry (Talk) 14:07, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
