Your articles prompt these tips: The title word or title phrase should be highlighted at its first appearance, usually in the first sentence, like this. Another user and I have attended to this in two of your articles, including Stone Store (see my editing of that article). If Kerikeri links to an article titled Attractions, that does not justify the conclusion that anyone reading the article Attractions arrived at it by following that link, nor that the reader knows that Kerikeri links to Attractions, nor that the reader has ever heard of Kerikeri. The title Attractions fails to indicate that the article has anything to do with Kerikeri. The reader has no way of knowing that. The title makes it appear to be about attractions generally — perhaps sexual attraction or the Eifel tower or the attraction between subatomic particles with opposite electric charges. • No problem! I'm half portuguese do tildes for me are evryday work: i forgot that some languages dont use them. Tildes are these signs ~. Like in the word leão (lion). Questions

Hi, it's probably best to ask me on my talk page as I don't put everything I edit on my watchlist, so I might not see your question if you put it elsewhere. I'm guessing you might mean Stanley Meads where I changed the format to match what Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Biographies recommends. No problem, Moriori. I've done the same too in the past. I suspect you have a browser that will not allow you to edit more than 32K. (Internet Explorer, perhaps? That is the usual culprit!) What happens is that when you save a page, it saves no more than 32K and everything over that is wiped. (The way it cut the page in mid-sentence certainly looked like a 32K cut off. I did that on a major article once!) If you are using I. Explorer, my advice is, don't! I've used quite a few browsers and that is one of the worst. It cuts off at 32K, mucks up pictures and captions, and does all sorts of nasty things. If you go to the Safari page you'll find a far better browser, or also Opera or Camino, which I'm using right now. In any case, don't worry about the cut off. Many many people have done it before and will do again. And when it is done, people don't curse the person who did it but the browser, with all fingers usually pointed at Internet Explorer (or one version of it) with the chorus of you again! :-) FearÉIREANN

Cannon

I saw your addition to cannon. I also found listings for 23 mm, 25 mm, 37 mm, 40 mm, 45 mm cannon. Any idea why such small guns were called cannon. I mean my blackpowder musket shoots a 19mm ball. Rmhermen 03:09, Nov 11, 2003 (UTC)

Hey Rmherman, I wish I knew. Grant me a little guesstimate. Google results I have seen seem to indicate that all machine guns over .5 inch (50 calibre) were referred to as cannon. Hardly authoritative. I see the US made the Hispano under licence and used it in several US aircraft, the P38 Lightning especially. The M3? Moriori 07:14, 11 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Aoraki

Firstly I must apologise for the length of time it has taken to reply to the message you left me, I had intended to reply earlier. When I initially saw the changes that you made to Mount Cook and Aoraki/Mount Cook, I thought that you were up to mischief. By just cut and pasting the article under a new name you lose all the history of the original article. The correct way to rename an article is to use the 'Move this page' option on the left of the page (seeWikipedia:How to rename (move) a page). I now realise that you had good intentions.

Also my initial investigations suggested the official name of the mountain was Mount Cook. Although I now realise my sources were out of date and Aoraki/Mount Cook is currectly the official name. However there is a Wikipedia policy about the naming of articles that the most commonly used name is used rather than the official name. It could be argued that Mount Cook is more commonly used than Aoraki/Mount Cook. However it is not a big issue to me, I am happy with either, as long as a redirect for the other name exists.

I hear what you are saying, but we must all move on, and Wiki must be accurate. Do a Wiki search for Calcutta and you rightly go to a page titled Kolkata. Search for Burma and you go to Myanmar.

However, if Aoraki/Mount Cook is to be name of the article then what is currently there should be deleted and Mount Cook should be moved there so as to preserve the history. Popsracer 10:23, 13 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I've put the Pania pic on the article, hope you like it. I tried a "Larger Version" at 500 pixels wide but it looked too pixellated. So I did just the one at 250 pixels wide (my normal value for a portrait format pic).

Many thanks Adrian. The caption is fine. The photo was especially taken for me by a kind lady at the Napier council office who dashed out with her digicam, and there is no copyright involved. Today when I tried to go to the page I could not access it. I searched for Pania and Pania of the Reef but, no, nothing. I eventually got there through the link on the Napier page. I think I know why you couldn't access Pania. For some weeks now the proper Wiki Search has been disabled and a Google search substituted. This should work OK but I believe that (for reasons I don't understand) Google actually searches an old cached copy which was stored by Google before Pania was created.

Is this what you did ........?

- you typed Pania into that article's search box

- you clicked on SEARCH.

- Google Search came up

- you clicked GOOGLE SEARCH and it said "Pania is not found"

but if you had clicked on GO in the Wiki search box you would have gone straight to Pania. Why? Because the GO search is working normally (GO means that only the article titles are searched). Very useful to avoid the rather useless Google search if you know the exact article title. I hope this helps!

Subic Bay

Hi Moriori-- I think someone else has now edited Subic Bay since I was last in it. The sentence you point to is certainly a tangle and needs a rewrite, but the best way to do it would be to add more content and I don't really know much about it - I was just providing a stub because Subic was on the Most Wanted list (and I thought it was somewhere else which I did know about). The problem is....

Hi Moriori: The problem with the Mount Taranaki legend is that the way you had the page written, it looked like wikipedia believes in the legend, when, even in the God page, wikipedia leaves an opening for non-believers, by not asserting that God IS God. I myself am a Christian, I only believe in one, marvelous and omnipotent God. But even I have to stay away from saying that God, as in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, is the truth here at wikipedia: That would open a can of people saying , but wait, I believe in Allah! etc etc etc, and that could happen to your page too. Remember, many people worldwide do not know about New Zealand myths, so, as a consequence, many would ask you why do you call Mount Taranaki a God? The fact it says according to legend should be revelant only because I put that there, to make it look neutral.

Your page isnt bad, far from that actually. I honestly tell you that because I, of all people, know how to write a bad page, ask Zoe. But (and I learned this the tough way) the number one commandment at wikipedia is that we must leave the subjects open for debate, in other words, we can't express our feelings as to whether Air New Zealand, for example, is the best airline of the world (which I think it is) or Muhammad Ali the greatest boxing champion of all time. Ali was a three time Heavyweight champion, that's a fact. I know in my heart that my Christian God is God as a fact, but to others, He might not be, so that makes my belief an opinion. If you look at most other legend pages, such as Chupacabras, its clarified with words that wikipedia does not assert or denies these legends.

Well, to resume my words, the fact that it looked that wikipedia asserted that Mount Taranaki is a God and that this legend might not be very well known outside New Zealand (although I cant say because I havent travelled that much) were the reasons I put it on VFD. Hey again Ping. IMMHO Wikipedia can?t take itself seriously or be taken seriously because many Wikipedians put themselves above Wikipedia, seemingly oblivious to the fact that the objective is to create an informative, all encompassing and totally unbiased encyclopedia. When my Mount Taranaki Legend was put on the vfd list I decided to sit back for a few days, take a deep breath and observe subsequent Wikipedia activities. The blatant POV bias and censorship of some articles I saw is beyond comprehension. I now believe my Mount Taranaki Legend item would never have been noticed had it not mentioned the word god. Edit wars are appalling. Articles which are nicely constructed by some users are often savaged by others who seem to think that adding heaps of unnecessary verbosity is a good idea. Wikipedia is literally a chain of links, and the weakest link sets the integrity for the whole of Wikipedia. There are a hell of a lot of weak links at the moment, and I see why people simply give up and move on. It is very sad. Regarding Maori Culture, I was considering working through parts of it, seeking assistance from people considered to be authoritative, but I'm not sure now it is worth the effort. Do the Maori culture page. I think it would be a good, informative page coming from you. Just remember, keep it neutral, that way no one would say wait, I dont think that way! or something. As writers, I know that the NPOV issue is sticky. I mean I would love to write about blue being the red of the 2000s in fashion, but then again.....I myself got a lot of stern warnings once upon a time here at wikipedia for not being neutral...I say, go for it! Vandalism

Hi, thanks for the message on my talk page. That really is quite ammusing, I'll add it to Wikipedia:Yet more bad jokes and other deleted nonsense. Deleting a page is however not necessary in such a case. It is simple vandalism and can simply be reverted, which doesn't require sysop powers. Deletion only becomes an issue if copyvio text was inserted (I checked via google, and the stuff in there seems to be original). How did you notice it though? Sleep? No, I never do that. :) I'd assume he is just taking the raw data, which, to the best of my knowledge, is something that can not be copyrighted. See for example, Feist v. Rural which states "information" is not copyrightable, but "collections" of information can be, this post of the mailing list also claiming information is not copyrightable. Any creative expression involved is, and Wikipedia talk:Copyrights#Are lists copyright? which restates the above. So if he is simply "filling in data", then my guess is that would be ok. I reverted your move again. Please move using the methods outlined at Wikipedia:How to rename (move) a page. I have deleted the page history at Toga Defence Services to allow this to work. The page with the proper page history is currently at Tonga Defence Service. Hello, Cheeky!

You changed the dates from the format 1st Janurary 1900 to 1 January 1900. Hello, Cheeky! is a British show, and British grammar uses the former style. Rotary horsepower

Thanks for the pointer about Rotary engine. Both figures were conversions from 50 hp, but I just rounded to the nearest 1 kW in the first case and the nearest 10 kW in the second. The text is a bit unclear and really means that the difference being discussed is the number of cylinders. You will see that I have modified the text and the kW values match. Thanks for that.
