Congressman or Representative

[edit]

This can be considered for all US politicial pages. In the "Vacancy" section, myself & another editor had a disagreement over whether "Congressman" should be used, or "Representative". IMHO, the latter should be used, as the former is a misnomer. Rather than edit-war, it's best to get views from others. GoodDay (talk) 18:05, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"Close election"

[edit]

Per recent edits made Nov. 19-20. Yes, I consider the election to have been "close". Please discuss here if you do not believe it was close and would like to discuss. A 1.6% margin in the national popular vote is certainly close, closer than any of the previous 4 elections. It was not a landslide, as most sources consider "landslides" to be 400+ electoral votes. Bill Clinton won over 360 votes in 1992, and Obama won over 360 in 2008... nobody ever calls those landslides. –Aaronw1109 (talk) (contribs) 04:01, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The mainstream news media aren't describing the 2024 election as being close. We go by those sources, as they've been judged by Wikipedia to be reliable. GoodDay (talk) 04:09, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Let's not bicker over what constitutes a 'close' presidential election. I have changed the phrasing to 'four incumbent vice presidents lost a presidential election', Drdpw (talk) 04:12, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Drdpw:That was going to be my next suggestion, since Humphrey's loss in 1968 was not close by any means. Thank you –Aaronw1109 (talk) (contribs) 04:13, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's a version, nobody can dispute. GoodDay (talk) 04:16, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Significant power?

[edit]

"The modern vice presidency is a position of significant power and is widely seen as an integral part of a president's administration." First, "widely seen" requires - OBVIOUSLY - a citation. Second, and more importantly, "significant power" is a bit misleading. The powers of the VPOTUS are »rarely« exercised because they CAN only be exercised in rare circumstances. (After the Electoral College counts are submitted, every 4 yrs; in the (rare) event of a 50-50 tie in the Senate, and »if« the President is unable to exercise his/her powers. I think this sentence should be edited to "The modern vice presidency can be a position of significant power. It is widely seen as an integral part of a president's administration. (if an adequate citation of the latter is found.) Another possibility is:"The modern vice presidency is a position of few, rarely exercised, significant powers." It seems to me that either of the proposed changes allows the reader a better understanding of the reality of the office's duties (and actual powers).98.17.42.35 (talk) 19:51, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
